About This Calculator

This calculator compares your year-to-date federal tax withholding, projected out for the full year, against your estimated total federal tax liability — helping you spot whether you're on track, under-withholding (risking a tax bill), or over-withholding (giving the government an interest-free loan).

How This Is Calculated

Projected Annual Withholding = (YTD Withholding ÷ Pay Periods Elapsed) × Total Pay Periods

If you've withheld $6,000 through 12 of 26 biweekly pay periods, you're on pace for about $13,000 for the year.

Assumptions

  • Uses 2026 federal tax brackets and standard deduction.
  • Assumes consistent withholding per paycheck for the rest of the year.
  • Does not include state tax, tax credits, or other income/deduction sources that would change your actual liability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Submit a new Form W-4 to your employer requesting additional withholding, either as a flat extra amount per paycheck or by adjusting your filing details — this helps avoid a large tax bill or underpayment penalty when you file.
