About This Calculator
Self-employed workers and others without tax withheld from their income generally must pay estimated taxes quarterly to avoid an underpayment penalty. This calculator combines estimated federal income tax and self-employment tax on your projected annual net profit, then divides the total into four quarterly payments.
How This Is Calculated
Quarterly Payment = (Federal Income Tax + Self-Employment Tax) ÷ 4
An $80,000 net profit (single filer) generates roughly $11,300 in self-employment tax plus federal income tax, for an estimated quarterly payment in the $3,000-$4,000 range depending on other income.
Assumptions
- Uses 2026 federal tax brackets, standard deduction, and self-employment tax rates.
- Assumes quarterly payments are spread evenly; the IRS's actual due dates aren't exactly 3 months apart.
- Does not include state estimated tax, which many states also require separately.
- Does not account for the Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction, which may reduce taxable income for many self-employed filers.
