Formula Used
Common pay period counts: weekly (52), biweekly (26), semi-monthly (24), monthly (12).
Good to Know
- • Biweekly pay means two months a year have three paychecks instead of two.
- • Semi-monthly pay is always on fixed dates, unlike biweekly.
Important Notes
- • Uses a single effective tax rate as a simplification.
- • Doesn't account for pay periods with irregular hours or bonuses.
Biweekly vs. Semi-Monthly: A Common Mix-Up
Biweekly pay (every two weeks) produces 26 paychecks a year, which means two months will have three paychecks instead of the usual two — useful to plan around for larger expenses. Semi-monthly pay (twice a month, often the 1st and 15th) produces exactly 24 paychecks a year on fixed dates. The two schedules are easy to confuse but produce different per-paycheck amounts for the same annual salary.
Why Your Actual Paycheck May Differ
Real paychecks often include additional variables this calculator simplifies away — pay period timing around holidays, bonus payments taxed at a different rate, or benefit elections that change mid-year. Treat this as a planning estimate rather than an exact prediction of any single paycheck.
What These Terms Mean
- Pay frequency — how many paychecks are issued per year (52, 26, 24, or 12).
A Practical Example: Same Salary, Different Schedules
$60,000 salary at a 20% effective tax rate, comparing biweekly vs. monthly pay:
Monthly gross = $60,000 ÷ 12 = $5,000; net ≈ $4,000
Total annual net pay is identical either way — the schedule only changes how it's divided across the year, which matters for cash-flow timing (e.g. matching a monthly rent due date) even though the yearly total doesn't change.
Pay Frequency Comparison Table
$60,000 salary, 20% effective rate:
| Frequency | Net per Check |
|---|---|
| Weekly (52) | $923 |
| Biweekly (26) | $1,846 |
| Monthly (12) | $4,000 |
What Trips People Up Estimating Paychecks
- Forgetting the 2-3 paycheck months on biweekly pay — budgeting only for the typical two-paycheck month misses these.
- Not accounting for benefit deductions — health insurance and other elections reduce net pay further.
