About This Calculator
FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) uses the concept of a 'FIRE number' — typically 25x your annual expenses, based on a 4% safe withdrawal rate — as the savings target for full financial independence. This calculator computes your FIRE number and estimates how many years it will take to reach it based on your current savings, contributions, and expected return.
How This Is Calculated
FIRE Number = Annual Expenses ÷ Withdrawal Rate
$48,000 in annual expenses at a 4% withdrawal rate gives a FIRE number of $1,200,000 — the traditional '25x expenses' rule.
Assumptions
- The 4% rule is based on historical U.S. market research (the 'Trinity Study') and isn't guaranteed to hold for all future market conditions.
- Assumes a constant contribution rate and investment return until reaching the FIRE number.
- Does not account for Social Security, part-time income, or major life changes.
