About This Calculator

Bonuses are typically withheld at a flat federal supplemental wage rate (22% for bonuses under $1 million in a year), separate from your regular paycheck withholding. This calculator estimates your bonus withholding and net bonus amount. Note this is withholding, not necessarily your final tax liability — that depends on your total annual income.

How This Is Calculated

Federal Withholding = Bonus × 22% (IRS supplemental wage flat rate)

A $5,000 bonus has about $1,100 withheld for federal tax under the flat rate, plus FICA, netting roughly $3,517.50.

Assumptions

  • Uses the IRS 22% flat supplemental wage withholding rate for bonuses under $1 million in a calendar year (37% applies above $1 million).
  • Assumes the bonus is paid separately from a regular paycheck; if combined with regular wages, employers may instead use the aggregate method, which can produce a different withholding amount.
  • Withholding is not the same as final tax owed — your actual tax depends on your total annual taxable income and bracket.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's not actually taxed at a higher rate — the 22% flat rate is a withholding method, not your final tax rate. If your marginal tax bracket is lower than 22%, you may get some of that withholding back as a refund when you file your return.
