About This Calculator

This calculator estimates the square footage of flooring material you'll need for a room, including a waste allowance for cuts and mistakes (common for tile, hardwood, and laminate installs), plus the estimated material cost.

How This Is Calculated

Material Needed = Room Area × (1 + Waste %)

A 14×12 ft room (168 sq ft) with a 10% waste allowance needs about 185 sq ft of flooring material.

Assumptions

  • Waste allowance covers cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching — complex layouts (diagonal, herringbone) typically need more.
  • Does not include underlayment, trim, or installation labor costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cutting flooring to fit around room edges, doorways, and obstacles inevitably wastes some material, and having spare pieces on hand also helps with future repairs if a plank or tile gets damaged later.
