About This Calculator
This calculator estimates the square footage of flooring material you'll need for a room, including a waste allowance for cuts and mistakes (common for tile, hardwood, and laminate installs), plus the estimated material cost.
How This Is Calculated
Material Needed = Room Area × (1 + Waste %)
A 14×12 ft room (168 sq ft) with a 10% waste allowance needs about 185 sq ft of flooring material.
Assumptions
- Waste allowance covers cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching — complex layouts (diagonal, herringbone) typically need more.
- Does not include underlayment, trim, or installation labor costs.
