About This Calculator

This calculator estimates the cost of a full charge for an electric vehicle based on your battery's usable capacity, your electricity rate, and typical charging losses, then converts that into a cost-per-mile figure using your EV's efficiency rating.

How This Is Calculated

Cost = (Battery Capacity ÷ Charging Efficiency) × Electricity Rate

Charging Efficiency
Percentage of grid energy that actually reaches the battery, typically 85-90%

A 75 kWh battery at $0.16/kWh with 88% efficiency costs about $13.64 for a full charge, covering roughly 262 miles at 3.5 mi/kWh.

Assumptions

  • Uses a home electricity rate; public charging (especially DC fast charging) is typically more expensive per kWh.
  • Charging efficiency accounts for energy lost as heat, not battery degradation over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Charging isn't 100% efficient — some energy from the grid is lost as heat during the charging process. This calculator accounts for that loss using the charging efficiency percentage.
